Meet the white-skinned radish Daikon


Since ancient times, radish has been grown on our land. And if earlier our great-grandfathers ate mainly black varieties, then in recent years in Russian gardens it is increasingly possible to meet a white guest from Japan - Daikon or sweet radish.

Like its "dark-skinned" domestic relative, Daikon is useful for colds, as well as for violations of the liver, gallbladder, intestines. In addition, it lacks the bitter oils that make black radish harmful to the elderly.

The healthy and tasty Daikon has become popular with us due to its unpretentiousness, excellent preservation and high yield. The time to sow this crop is the second half of July. Instead of fresh manure, it is better to fill in freshly cut nettle before planting. At least this is what experienced summer residents who are well familiar with this variety advise.

Like any other vegetable garden, Daikon radish needs minimal care - weeding, watering (when there is not enough natural moisture). Ash helps from the invasion of small pests - midges. Sprinkle densely on young shoots, if it rains, repeat the procedure. You can harvest the crop gradually as you grow up. It is so pleasant to take out the first, young, sweet white roots from the ground. It is best to do this in dry weather, helping with a shovel if necessary.

There are many Daikon salad recipes. In terms of taste, its tender pulp is a bit like a turnip or cabbage stump.
