How to get prebonsai:
To obtain plants suitable for bonsai cultivation we can start by sowing the essences we want; if instead we want to start with already formed plants we can take off branches of the shrubs present in our garden. The easiest and most often used technique is that of the cutting; in spring or summer we take branches from a shrub, choosing those that do not bear flowers or fruits and those of younger vegetation, so not yet completely lignified. Divide each small branch into portions about 8-10 cm long, removing the leaves from the lower part; immerse about a couple of centimeters of the cutting in a powder of rooting hormone and then let it be mixed in a mixture of sand and peat in equal parts, to keep moist until rooting has taken place. If we have chosen to produce cuttings from shrubs with large foliage, remember to cut the leaves on the cutting in half. During rooting we vaporize the cuttings quite frequently, using demineralized water. Another method widely used to produce young people prebonsai is the layering; after having chosen an interesting branching we engrave the bark at the base of this branching, removing a strip of bark, leaving however at least 2-3 centimeters of intact bark; we tie a bag of transparent plastic film to the base of the incision and fill it with fresh and rich soil, well moistened. We proceed closing the bag also in the upper part, in this way we will obtain a kind of "suspended vessel" at the base of the branch that we intend to remove; over the weeks we proceed periodically moistening the soil inside the bag, in this way favoring the development of a "hanging" root system inside the container. When this root system reaches acceptable dimensions we proceed by severing the branch and placing it in a container.
