Nutrients: General information

The plants to grow and develop properly, need fundamental substances called nutrients that, through chlorophyll photosynthesis, transform into sugars and proteins that in turn will be used to form leaves, roots and flowers.
Plants find substances to grow in the air, water and soil. However, it happens that the plants cultivated for ornamental purposes in limited spaces, such as the vase, over the years exhaust the nourishment reserves present in the soil.
To prevent plants from suffering due to lack of nourishment, fertilizations are performed with products based on nutritive elements.
More than 60 of the elements present in plant tissues have been identified, but those indispensable for physiological functions are 12 and their possible limited availability can also lead to the death of the plant.
The main fertilizing substances are divided into 3 groups according to the quantity present in the plants.
The macroelements are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Used by the plant in lesser quantities we find the Meso elements, namely Calcium, Magnesium and Sulfur. While, always very important for the plant but necessary in small quantities we find the Microelements: Iron, Boron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Molybdenum.
From this issue we begin a series of articles that tends to provide some simple information on the importance of the twelve nutritive elements for plants, and to indicate how to recognize them in the labels of fertilizers, indicating the most suitable in different situations.
